    Protocol

    Specificity / Sensitivity

Cytochrome b Antibody recognizes endogenous levels of total cytochrome b protein.

    Species Reactivity:

    Human, Monkey

    Source / Purification

Polyclonal antibodies are produced by immunizing animals with a synthetic peptide corresponding to residues surrounding Pro208 of human cytochrome b protein. Antibodies are purified by peptide affinity chromatography.

    Background

Cytochrome b, encoded by the gene MT-CYB, is a subunit of ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase, also known as cytochrome bc1, or complex III, of the mitochondrial respiratory (electron transport) chain (1). This protein complex mediates electron transfer from ubiquinol to cytochrome c, contributing to the generation of a proton gradient that powers ATP synthesis (2). Cytochrome b is an integral membrane protein and notable for being the only protein within complex III that is encoded by the mitochondrial genome. Genetic sequence analyses have identified mutations in MT-CYB that are linked to a variety of diseases and pathologies (3,4). Natural variations in the sequence of MT-CYB have also proven highly useful as a tool to determine phylogenetic relationships between organisms (5).
