    Background

Laminin Subunit Beta-1 (LAMB1) is a protein that is a part of the laminin family, which are extracellular matrix glycoproteins. Laminins are major components of basement membranes and play a critical role in cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, and phenotype stability. LAMB1 is involved in the assembly and stability of the basement membrane, which is a specialized sheet-like structure that surrounds muscle, fat, and nerve cells. It lines the surface of other cells, such as endothelial cells that line blood vessels (1). Mutations in the LAMB1 gene can lead to developmental abnormalities and diseases. For example, upregulation of LAMB1 promotes cell proliferation, invasion, and migration in gastric cancer (2). Furthermore, LAMB1 mutations are associated with cobblestone brain malformation, pain sensitivity, and blood-brain-barrier integrity (3-5).
