    Background

    MMD (monocyte to macrophage differentiation factor), also known as PAQR11, is a member of the PAQR (progestin and AdipoQ receptor) family that was identified in a screen based on differential expression in macrophages compared to monocyte progenitors (1). MMD/PAQR11 has seven transmembrane domains and is localized to the Golgi apparatus (2). It can form a complex with Ras and activate ERK signaling (2). Knockdown of MMD/PAQR11 inhibited monocyte differentiation and alleviated progression of collagen-induced rheumatoid arthritis (3). Expression of MMD/PAQR11 has been associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and metastasis (4). Studies have also found that it can regulate starvation-mediated lipolysis in white adipose tissue and deletion of PAQR11 in mice leads to resistance in high-fat diet-induced obesity (5).
