    Background

TRF1 (Telomeric Repeat-binding Factor 1) is one of six core proteins of the shelterin complex (TRF1, TRF2, Rap1, TIN2, POT1 and TPP1), which regulates telomere length and integrity. The shelterin complex localizes to telomeres and contributes to genomic stability by protecting telomeres from inappropriate processing by DNA repair pathways (1). Dysregulated expression of TRF1 promotes genomic instability and cancer progression in mice and humans. Both TRF1 and TRF2 are potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets in human cancer (2-4).
